Look of the Week: Gatsby Glamour

Another week, another new look. Fashion knows no limits and whilst last week we were lusting over Fifties Americana fashion, this week our inspiration comes from a different era... the Twenties. Thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s big screen adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby, due to be released in December, Twenties fashion has made a comeback. Think drop-waist dresses, sequins, beading and fringing – anything glamorous. With the Masquerade Ball taking place this coming weekend in St Andrews, there is no better occasion to don your finest Twenties attire and add to the decadence by accessorising with a mask.

Models sashayed down the runways at Ralph Lauren, Marchesa, Gucci and Alberta Ferretti to name a few. Full-length glittering gowns were a popular sighting along with mid-length drop-waisted dresses. Accessorised with strappy heels and long necklaces or dangly earrings, the beauty is all in the details. With a wide range of metallic shades on show, Marchesa opted for layers of tassels to recreate that jazzy feel of the era whereas Ralph Lauren preferred all-over beading. Off the catwalk, the trend has been a hit with celebrities with the likes of Georgia May Jagger, Amanda Seyfried and Camilla Belle all working flapper-style dresses on the red carpet. With behind-the-scenes images already leaked from the filming of The Great Gatsby you can seek inspiration directly from Carey Mulligan, whilst Marion Cotillard’s character in the recent film Midnight in Paris is also a good model for the roaring twenties.

Unsure how to get that fabulous flapper look? Look no further than our top picks of the High Street:

The dress: French Connection’s Sparkle Hour dress is the perfect statement dress; contemporary yet with a touch of vintage, this drop-waisted glittering dress is sure to turn heads.

The shoes: Put some swing in your step with the Jazzhands Glitter Peep Shoes from Topshop. Available in nude or lavender, the Miu-Miu inspired heel and subtle touch of sparkle means you can be glamorous from head to toe.

The bag: Accessorize is always a safe bet for finding pretty evening bags. This season they have a wide range of Twenties-style clutches. Their Ballroom Diamante bag is just the ticket – classic and elegant its pleat effect is very in-keeping with the era.

The headband: Make like a true flapper girl and sport a headband. River Island’s bejewelled gold headpiece is the perfect deco detail to complete your look.

Whether you want to go all out or stick to one piece, you’re sure to dazzle in a Twenties-inspired outfit. With just the right balance of opulence and fun, it’s the perfect way to complement a dramatic masquerade mask. So channel your inner Daisy Buchanan this weekend and step back in time to the Jazz Age...
